This year, Adelphi University will become the first institution to be involved with Winthrop- University Hospital's Cans for Cancer Program through SAAC participation. The program was created to raise money that will ultimately be used for children with cancer.
SAAC will play a voluntary/community service role by placing recycling receptacles around campus, also known as RIKI's, which will be used to collect bottles and cans for dollar value. SAAC would then gather and sort the bottles and cans to be picked up and sent to a recycling center. The proceeds help the Children's Cancer for Kids Center at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York.
Adelphi is also helping the Cans for Cancer cause by attending events at Nassau Coliseum and clearing out out the RIKI's at the end of the event. All cans and bottles are then recycled, with all proceeds benefiting the children with cancer program.
It is a wonderful partnership and the perks include not only knowing we are helping a good cause but also getting the chance to see some great concerts and shows. So far this year, our softball team attended Good Charlotte, the women's soccer team saw Shania Twain and the men's lacrosse team went to Tony Hawk's Bam Bam Tour. So far our efforts have been very successful and we look forward to participating in more events throughout the year.
