2002 Adelphi Athletics Awards Banquet A Success

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi University hosted is annual Athletics Award banquet to honor the many student-athletes and their accomplishments during the 2001-02 season. The catered event, attended by student-athletes, staff and administrators, took place at Adelphi's University Center.

Top academic awards were presented to seniors Eddie Williams and Allison Schultz. Williams was also named Adelphi Male Athlete of the Year, while junior Alexis Seeley picked up Female Athlete of the Year.

Robert Hartwell, Director of Athletics, provided the opening statement, congratulating the student-athletes on a phenomenal season. This year proved to be a successful one for the Panthers as Adelphi took home its second consecutive NYCAC Commissioner's Cup for the most outstanding athletic program in the conference.

- Some highlights from the past season included:
- Sixth straight NYCAC men's cross-country title
- Second straight NYCAC women's cross-country title; First-ever NCAA Division II Championship appearance
- First NYCAC women's soccer title since 1997
- Women's tennis finished third at NYCAC Championships
- Men's basketball (28-3) won second straight Northeast Regional title, advancing to their second Elite Eight
- Women's basketball (28-3) won first-ever NYCAC regular season and conference titles, Northeast Regional runners-up
- Women's lacrosse improved to an 11-4 overall record in their second year as a varsity sport
- Softball finished second in the NYCAC and were named ECAC Mid-Atlantic runners-up

In addition, awards were presented for freshmen through senior athlete of the year awards. Each team also had an opportunity to award special team honors and team MVP awards.
